Snapshot of “Uncle Mac”
at Mayo Clinic, 1937

The History Center of Olmsted County [Minnesota] and Rochester Public Library will co-host a “Courtship of Two Doctors” reading and author book signing at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the library, 101 2nd Street SE. It’s part of the library’s popular Visiting Author Series.

“Mayo Clinic and Rochester, Minnesota, figure prominently in the courtship letters of Alice Baker and Joe Holoubek,” says author Martha Fitzgerald. “They met there in 1937 and pinned their hopes on a return for graduate fellowships. They highly admired pathology professor Dr. William Carpenter MacCarty–‘Uncle Mac’– and others they met through the summer fellowship program.”

Fitzgerald did research at the history center, the library and Mayo Historical Unit archives beginning in 2007.
