Overview

Senior medical students Alice Baker of New Orleans and Joe Holoubek of Omaha meet in 1937 and begin a two-year correspondence across 1,100 miles. They set their sights on a return to Mayo Clinic, the medical mecca where they found each other and danced to the haunting Harbor Lights. Grave illness and career setbacks shake their confidence, but the two decide to face an uncertain future together, trusting in each other and the relationship they built letter by letter.

Compiled with meticulous attention to detail, The Courtship of Two Doctors provides an inspiring look at the birth of a marriage and a lifetime of service.

Praise for Courtship

In this fast-paced modern world of e-mails and texts, what a delight it is to savor this book of letters written between two physicians-in-training. Drs. Joe and Alice Holoubek shared their observations, knowledge, and personal journeys as they fell in love with each other and the practice of medicine.

—novelist Judy Christie

For medical students and residents in training, this is ‘must’ reading. A lesson from those who came before that great obstacles can be overcome and all will be worth it in the end.

Robert A. Barish M.D.

Chancellor, LSU Health Shreveport

Their letters revealed many tips for communication in a marriage: Be Spirit-filled. Be attentive and sensitive. Be honest. Be loving. Be wise. And sometimes, be quiet and just listen.

Courtship of Two Doctors

This charming book is replete with enough medical references to interest any student of medical history. Other readers will fall under the spell of the music, automobiles, and social mores of the 1930s.

Great new book of letters ... This well-done book should be on best-seller lists.

The tenderness, the joy and the hope of these two especially against the background of widespread and potentially fatal TB at home and Hitler's marauding in Europe makes it a love story to be cherished.
