“Letters to Luke” by retired Shreveport physician Joe E. Holoubek, 89, has won the Independent Publisher Award for Religious Fiction. The 2005 competition attracted books from more than 1,500 publishers around the world — from all 50 U.S. states, nine Canadian provinces and 18 foreign countries. There were nearly 2,200 entries in 60 categories.

The book, which brings the gospels to life in letters from a 1st century physician to Luke the Evangelist, was published in June 2004 by Little Dove Press. This was the ninth year of the awards but the first year for the category of religious fiction.
