Author Martha Holoubek Fitzgerald will speak on “The Faith Journey of Drs. Alice Baker and Joe Holoubek” Friday, August, 10, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shreveport.
Through editing and researching her parents’ courtship letters, Fitzgerald says, “I learned what a powerful influence my mother was on my father’s spirituality, beginning in 1938 when they were courting by letter. They were doctors in training, about to begin their year of internship, she in New Orleans and he in Omaha.
“‘Yesterday our preacher talked on Christian love,’ Mother wrote one Monday night, ‘and his text was the beautiful thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians. I’ve never heard a more beautiful sermon.’ Their spiritual journey together begins at this point, with a Methodist leading a Catholic to a deeper grounding in Bible study.”
Fitzgerald adapted their letters into the new book The Courtship of Two Doctors: A 1930s Love Story of Letters, Hope & Healing (August 15, Little Dove Press).
The St. Joseph Soiree will be in the Family Life Center, 211 Atlantic Street. Book sales will benefit the marriage ministry of the Diocese of Shreveport. Dr. Alice and Dr. Joe, founding members of St. Joseph, brought the pre-Cana marriage preparation program to Shreveport in the 1960s.
